Hacienda Napoles

The Nápoles estate was the favorite place of the world's biggest drug lord Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, where the Medellín cartel's meetings and parties took place.

The property had a huge zoo where he had all kinds of exotic animals that he brought from Africa and other parts of the world, such as giraffes, camels, hippos, deer, tapirs, kangaroos, ostriches, elephants, rhinoceroses and more. It also had 7 swimming pools, artificial lakes and jet skis, among other things.

It is located 4 hours from Medellin in Doradal Antioquia and can be reached by bus from the northern terminal. The ticket costs 40 thousand pesos, about 10 dollars more or less.

Today it is a theme park and zoo that offers various activities. You can take tours along all the ecological trails that offer you all kinds of animals, some enclosed and others free.

It has the largest herd of hippos outside of Africa and a large number of ostriches, two elephants, lions, tigers and many other species.

It also has two museums: one is the African museum that was built in the old bullring that the estate had. And another in homage to the victims that is next to a water park, where you can learn the whole story of the capo through photos and newspaper reports.

Another attraction is the water parks, of which there are three today, so it can also be a fun place to spend with the family if they wish.

I personally toured the farm, the ecological trails, took photos with the ostriches, visited the museums and finally went to the runway that the drug lord used to get his drugs out and bring in the thousands of dollars of his fortune made with cocaine.

Hacienda Nápoles is in Doradal so, if you visit it you can also do other activities apart from visiting the hacienda such as getting to know one of the most crystalline rivers in Antioquia, Rio Claro or visiting the Colombian Santorini.

Recommendation

I recommend taking at least two days to visit Hacienda Nápoles due to its 4-hour distance from Medellín.

Bring lots of sunscreen and a hat

Stay hydrated in hot weather

If you go for two days you can spend one day touring the estate and another at the water parks.
